Spotlight on Jaxin Karst: Rising Star of the Nanaimo Buccaneers

In the fast-paced world of junior hockey, few players embody the spirit of growth, community, and determination quite like Jaxin Karst of the Nanaimo Buccaneers. At 17 years old, this 2007-born forward from Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, is making waves in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL), blending on-ice talent with off-ice charisma that endears him to fans young and old.

Born in 2007, Karst stands at 6’0” (183 cm) and weighs 168 lbs (76 kg), shooting right-handed. His hockey journey began with the Assiniboia Minor Hockey Association, but it was at the elite Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, where he honed his skills playing for the world-famous Hounds. Now in his second season with the Buccaneers, Karst has already shown promise as a key contributor. Last year, he appeared in 33 games, averaging nearly a point per game—a strong foundation for what’s shaping up to be a breakout campaign.

This season, Karst has tallied four points early on, and projections paint an exciting picture: in 48 games, he’s on a pace to notch 36 goals, 12 assists, for a total of 48 points, along with 168 penalty minutes. These numbers highlight his offensive flair and gritty style, making him a player to watch as the Buccaneers push for deeper levels of success in the VIJHL.

But Karst’s impact extends beyond the stats sheet. Bill Bestwick, the Buccaneers’ Director of Operations and General Manager, who has mentored countless athletes over his storied career, praises Karst’s ability to inspire. “He’s a young man who really connects well with his army of young followers,” Bestwick notes. This connection aligns perfectly with the Buccaneers’ core values, where community involvement is paramount. Owner Nicole Brandenburg’s passion for bridging the team with the local area has created a platform for players like Karst to give back, supported by Bestwick and his dynamic coaching staff and high-energy off-ice team.

Karst himself is thriving in Nanaimo, embracing the island lifestyle and the supportive environment. “My time with the Bucs has been awesome,” he shares. “The coaches and staff are really supportive and want to push us to the next level. We have a great group of guys who make it fun every day. My billets are great and make it feel like home.” These words reflect not just his personal adjustment but also the family-like atmosphere that defines the Buccaneers organization.

As Karst continues to develop, he represents the heart of what makes junior hockey special: young talent growing alongside a hockey-mad community that cheers them on. His story is one of perseverance, skill, and genuine engagement, inspiring the next generation of players and fans alike.
