Nanaimo Buccaneers

A Season to Remember Comes to an End

The Nanaimo Buccaneers’ playoff run came to a close Thursday night with a 2–0 loss, but the final score doesn’t come close to telling the story of what this group accomplished.

Nanaimo battled to the very end, with Tanner Ferrill turning aside 28 shots in a strong effort between the pipes. The Bucs pushed, created chances, and showed the same resilience that defined their entire season—but ultimately came up just short against a tough opponent.

And that’s where the game ends… but not the story.

This was a breakthrough year for the Buccaneers. From day one, this group set a new standard—earning the North Division regular season crown and establishing themselves as one of the league’s elite teams. It wasn’t just about wins; it was about identity, consistency, and belief.

When the playoffs began, Nanaimo elevated their game even further.

They opened with a dominant sweep of the Campbell River Storm, showcasing depth, discipline, and elite goaltending. Then came a hard-fought series against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings, where the Bucs proved they could handle adversity, big moments, and pressure—closing it out 4–2 to punch their ticket to the finals.

Throughout the run, leaders stepped up. Veterans delivered in key moments. Young players made their mark. And night after night, this team played for each other.

Behind the bench Coaches Tyler Gow and Brett Bestwick guided a group that bought in completely—playing fast, structured, and with a relentless compete level that made them tough to beat every single night.

More than anything, this season re-established Nanaimo as a force.

The Buccaneers reached their deepest playoff run since returning to the league in 2012, captured a division title, and gave their fans something to believe in again. The foundation has been set. The standard has been raised.

It didn’t end with a championship—but it ended with something just as important: momentum, pride, and a locker room that knows exactly what it takes to get back here.

This was more than a season.

It was the start of something.
