The Nanaimo Buccaneers travelled to Comox Saturday night with a chance to capture the North Island banner — and they delivered.
Holding a 3-2 series lead, the Bucs struck first and never trailed. Dylan Konschuh opened the scoring with his first playoff goal, followed by a huge shorthanded marker from Curtis Freeman to give Nanaimo a 2-0 lead after two periods.
Former Glacier King Aaron Pichette was outstanding between the pipes, shutting the door through 40 minutes and giving the Bucs full control heading into the third.
Rookie Dylan Lazaroff added to the lead midway through the final frame, ripping a laser to make it 3-0. The Glacier Kings pushed back late with a power play goal and another with the goalie pulled to make things interesting, but veteran Jack Barrett iced it with an empty netter.
With the 4-2 victory, the Buccaneers are your North Division Champions — marking the first title under the guidance and leadership of owner Nicole Brandenburg.
Nanaimo now awaits their South Division opponent as they prepare to battle for the VIJHL Championship. Stay tuned for dates and times to follow.
