The Nanaimo Clippers have added two exciting young talents to their roster for the 2026–2027 British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) season, announcing that defenseman Nate Barclay and forward Madden Cruickshank have each signed their letters of intent to join the club. Both players made a significant impact in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) with the Nanaimo Buccaneers, and their transitions will mark a big step forward in their hockey careers.
Nate Barclay: A Steady Force on the Blue Line
A key defenseman for the Buccaneers throughout the 2025–26 VIJHL season, Nate Barclay combined physical play with smart puck movement that helped anchor Nanaimo’s backend. So far this season, Barclay has recorded 14 goals and 21 assists for 35 points in 36 games. With 8 games remaining, he’s made an impressive offensive output for a defenseman in junior hockey.
Barclay wasn’t just a scorer — he brought leadership to the ice every night. His steady presence was recognized league-wide when he was selected to represent the Buccaneers at the 2026 VIJHL All-Star & Prospects event, earning spots on both the All-Star and Prospects rosters.
One standout performance saw Barclay contribute two goals in a dominant 9–2 road victory, helping the Bucs soar against the Kerry Park Islanders.
Madden Cruickshank: Dynamic Scorer Heads to Clippers
Forward Madden Cruickshank brought a dynamic offensive threat to Nanaimo’s lineup. Playing in the same 2025–26 VIJHL season, Cruickshank has put up 19 goals and 33 assists for 52 points in 39 games. With 8 games remaining, he is emerging as one of the Buccaneers’ most dangerous scoring weapons.
His speed and puck skill didn’t go unnoticed — Cruickshank was also selected for the VIJHL All-Star & Prospects Showcase, where he represented Nanaimo among the league’s top young forwards.
Whether driving the offence or creating scoring chances, Cruickshank consistently energized the Bucs attack and proved he can be relied on in tight situations.
Looking Ahead to the BCHL
The jump from the VIJHL to the BCHL represents a major step up in competition, and both Barclay and Cruickshank are poised to make an impact with the Nanaimo Clippers in 2026–2027. The Clippers — known for developing young players and preparing them for higher levels — will provide a new stage for these two to continue their growth.
Congratulations to both Nate and Madden — the Buccaneers are proud of your accomplishments and excited to finish the season strong as we continue the charge into the playoffs!
